Bay of Naples
Capri, Ischia, Amalfi, Sorrento, Positano. All conjure up great food, beautiful sweeping views and warm turquoise seas. Many villages on the Amalfi coast look like they are squeezed on to the edge of cliffs and they harbour superb restaurants serving equally superb seafood. Pompeii and Versuvius are within easy reach and even for the more adventurous, Ponza is accessible on a longer cruise.
Sardinia
This island is tremendously popular with motor and sailing yachts alike. The glamorous ports of Porto Cervo and Porto Rotondo attract the rich and famous along with some very serious sailors. The colour of the sea here is stunning, fair winds blow most of the year and there are dozens of lovely beaches on both Sardinia and the small surrounding islands.
The French island of Corsica lies just to the north with the precipitous port of Bonafacio guarded by a cliff top castle.
Portofino
Portofino is surely one of the most charming ports in the world and an ideal base for yachting in northern Italy. The Cinque Terre, five little fishing villages, are only a short cruise away and lie at the bottom of steep valleys, offering breathtaking walks and traditional restaurants. This piece of coast is considered so special that it was given National Park status in 1999.
